I don’t even feel like this on Valentine’s Day

September 12, 2008

I am feeling sad and lonely and melancholy today and cannot shake it. Today I feel like I will never find anyone, like no one will ever love me or choose me. You know it’s bad if I’m posting about it.

Since misery loves company, here are a few songs that make me weepy or sad for whatever reason. Um, enjoy?

Herman’s Hermits – There’s a Kind of Hush (Thanks for this one, Any Major Dude. And again, thanks for the lovely writeup)

Johnny Rivers – Summer Rain

Harry Connick, Jr. – But Not for Me (happy 41st birthday, Harry)

Awww honey, I’m sorry you’re feeling blue. But please remember that I am one of your biggest fans, and am sending you lots of hugs across the miles. You are fabulous from what I’ve gotten to know, and anyone would be lucky to have such a lovely and talented lady. SERIOUSLY.

So forget about Birthday Boy’s “But Not For Me,” and go to his hero, the original Mr. Sinatra. (And NOT “in The Wee Small Hours, either.) I’d say “High Hopes” but that’s too corny (and now can you get it out of your head? Nope!), and instead steer you to “The Coffee Song” or anything from Ring -A-Ding-Ding. Or “Come Fly With Me.”

    And take care, honey pie!

hey there. cool blog. i'm gonna go with sparkleneely on this one: what you need is a bit of Frank. Frank always works for me when i gets all a-gloomy. " That's Life. " that ought to do it. & if it doesn't, may i recomend a 12 year old malt? nothing in this world guaranteed to pick a body up like a good 12 year old malt.

keep up the good stuff on the blog, matey.

Relationships. Loneliness. Sadness. Things that I and many others know all too well. As cheesy as it might seem, hopefully you can find joy in the fact that many of us here have a better day for simply having paid a visit to this very site. Even those few moments are something to look forward to everyday. It might not seem like much, but it is true. Nobody likes feeling “blue”, but please know you are not alone. I say with all sincerity…your art and you sense of the music world are wonderful. You have much to offer the world. The sun is still out there above the clouds.

    Good vibes to you…

(From the guy who tried to cheer you up all those years ago by giving you that Harry Connick CD for “When Harry Met Sally”)

Karen, you are so kind. I’m so happy I “met” you. And what you (and Joe Bloke) suggest – booze and Frank is so elementary that I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of it myself. I mean, honestly.

Of course, I would have chosen “In the Wee Small Hours” or “Deep in a Dream” or “One More for My Baby.” Because I wallow.

And sadly, the only one you mention that I have is Come Fly With Me. Sad!

Joe, I can’t thank you enough for commenting to lend support even though we’ve never “met.” Your advice is sound – “That’s Life” is an object lesson, man. And thanks for the kind words.

Todd, thank you for your kindness and support too. You said some very nice things and they helped.

    You guys are the best.

We all get exactly that feeling sometimes, and even though it makes no sense, you just can’t shake it sometimes.
And you know what? Sometimes it’s OK to wallow in self-pity for a couple of day. Think of it as colonic cleansing for the soul. No, wait…

Ha, well, I suppose I’ll be a little thinner and healthier for the blues the other night. 🙂

I just saw this post today, and although with any luck you’re feeling better by now, I’m sorry you were going through a rough patch. It’s true, a little wallowing now and then isn’t necessarily a bad thing (and believe me, I know from wallowing). I could suggest a whole playlist of good melancholy music, but if you’re like me — and I assume everyone is — it’s easy to get in a downward spiral where depressing songs only make matters worse. At the other end of the spectrum, you could try something like this instead, or any of the Sinatra suggestions above should do the trick.

If I can make a tangential suggestion, though, maybe you should try to find a creative outlet for those feelings. I happen to know that you’re pretty handy with a camera, and I’m sure that you could find some way to represent how you’re feeling visually. You don’t need to create something out of thin air, just seek out some scenes or objects that match your mood. You might find that the thought process itself clears your head a bit, and you end up feeling better.

In any case, don’t worry…as sparkleneely/Karen rightly said, you’re a wonderful person and i know you’ll end up with all the happiness you deserve. Hang in there, kiddo.

Greg, you always know what to say when I need cheering up. Thank you.

Oh? You do still have my email address, right? Hint hint.

And BTW, OMG the Puppini Sisters link brings me great joy. You remembered!

You’re so right about using the mood to constructive ends; next time I get to feeling like that, I will try to come up with something creative to do with it.

Thanks again, Greg. You’re awfully sweet.
