Please Mr. Gravedigger
October 16, 2010
Marion Cemetery, Marion, Ohio
This is a lovely tribute to someone who sounds like his co-workers had a great deal of affection for him. What a great epitaph.
Our first song, early Bowie (1967!) is also about a gravedigger, from the point of view of someone who has reason to fear him. It’s a wonderfully shocking song.
David Bowie – Please Mr. Gravedigger
LeRoy Bowman – Graveyard
Thurl Ravenscroft & Friends – Grim Grinning Ghosts
Bessie Smith – Cemetery Blues

What an unusual monument. I take it the plaques were attached to an unhewn stone?
I believe the plaque is actually the lid of a container for cremains. Oh, the irony. 🙂
I just found out about that David Bowie song a few years ago. I love it.
I do too! It’s pretty unique.
Looks like he died rather young – only 40 – poor dude.
I hope he had a good life.
